Week 7 Blog post 6
I agree with the perspective of Ginwright and Cammarota in the reading. I agree with the statement about how the urban youth is looked upon as being problematic for the community and I also agree with the fact that it is important to understand the reasoning. Thinking broadly about the problems and creating programs to assist the youth was a topic I found important as well because it is easy to assign blame to the youth.
Social Justice focuses more on the general opportunities and privileges of a community. An example would be if a white person and African American person was to commit the same crime, but the African American person receives more of a punishment. The roles can also be reversed, but the main idea is that Social Justice revolves around who has what set of privileges.
YDEV is more centered on assisting the youth with their growth into becoming adults. YDEV can help kids with social issues at school, problems at home with family and many other areas. In other words, YDEV is a program to help improve the lives of children.
The Kimberly Jones Video in my opinion was more centered around Social Justice. Kimberly Jones was speaking proudly about her background and expresses her opinions about how African Americans riot and loot in their own communities. She feels that the reality is that black people do not own those communities so destroying it would not matter. She expressed that idea because she feels that people riot and do things like that because the society is filled with systematic oppression. This is how I feel, the Kimberly Jones Video is related to Social Justice
Hi Angel, I really enjoyed reading your blog I like that you gave your own example of social justice. Also I like how you separate how social justice and ydev are different!
