Week 4 Blog post 3

One example of an adult who was trying to understand Marcus's mindset was his own mother. She loves him and supports him regardless of what other people from the school say about her son. She isn't in full denial that her son may need help but does become suspicious when the school begins to suggest many ways to improve Marcus's behavior.   Another example is the teacher. She demonstrates understanding Marcus with her actions and patience. Naturally, she will limit certain behaviors from him but usually she will allow him to take a break from the classroom and will do her best to not allow Marcus's actions to affect her teaching skills. In other words, she will allow Marcus to sometimes voice his perspective. The third example is Marcus's counselor. Week 3 Blog 2

One of the stereotypes that the authors from the reading and video discuss is that young people are rebellious. Another stereotype from both authors about young people is that the black culture always has the negative representation. In the Video, it focused about how black girls are treated in schools compared to other girls or different backgrounds. One of the girls was asked if she was sexually active and she realized that her white friends had not brought up the topic with her which implies that the white girls of that school are not asked those kinds of questions. A final stereotype is that the youth always had problems. People would ask "what's wrong with the youth" as if children had the mentality of an adult. Children were expected to reach an adults standard and were criticized if they did. I experienced discrimination during my senior year of high school. It was age discrimination. It was my senior year of High school and my peers and I were finishing our senior...

Week 2 Blog Post 1

Reading this article, I learned about he Deficit approach. I knew there were programs available for assisting the youth with their problems but I never knew the names and that there were specific areas to be assisted. The area that the article affirms with me is the paragraph titled "A Shift in Policy". I support how the Department of Health and Human Services and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency prevention began to focus on creating programs in the community to support the youth. I would like to learn more about the personal perspectives of the youth's involved. An update of before and after they received help from these programs to see how they feel and if they think there was a change.
